Unlikely Places features artists who deal with place as a focus of interest. Whether it is an impossible imaginary place as in Juan Rodas’ underwater cityscape or a seemingly ordinary space as in Gary Kachadorian’s life-size photo-copied wall prints, the places these artists portray are filled with ambiguity, mystery, and wonder, and they often defy logic. The meaning of place is constantly changing, depending on the viewer, and is always being filtered through each individual’s previous experiences and history. A place is a location, real or imagined, with definite or indefinite borders. Casual expressions such as “being in place,” “out of place,” and “took place” point to the importance we give to a particular space. An ongoing question for visual artists has been how to portray a three-dimensional world on a two- dimensional surface. The artists in this exhibition find their own solutions to this age-old quest. The exhibition includes art in a variety of media, including a site-specific wall drawing.
